X-Filme support for first independent Iraqi feature film |
|
UNDEREXPOSURE is the first uncensored independent feature film to be shot in Iraq for more than 12 years. Director Oday Rasheed used old film material by Saddam's Department of Propaganda to film his poetic reflexion about a filmmaker afflicted by doubts in post-war debris of Baghdad. Rasheed did not have any money but a brave crew and lots of patience and had used up all resources by the end of the shoot.
With the support of X-Filme producers Tom Tykwer and Maria Koepf, UNDEREXPOSURE will now be edited and finished in Berlin. This unusual project is scheduled for a release in spring 2005. Tykwer: 'It was a very interesting experiment concerning cultural exchange. For me personally, it also was an extremely inspiring encounter with an enthusiastic cineast from a completely different world.'

Filmclub Berlin-Baghdad founded in Berlin |
|
Under the patronage of Tom Tykwer, the 'Filmclub Berlin-Baghdad' was founded in Berlin's open-air restaurant 'Oststrand' on 19 August 2004.
The club was initiated by Marie Steinmann and Klaas Glenewinkel and its main goal is to establish contacts to the very active cineasts and film makers in Iraq. The main idea behind this club is to collect films on dvd in Germany that are unavailable in Iraq. These films will then be added to Iraqi film archives and also be shown in independent Iraqi cinemas.
Therefor, every guest of the founding night in Berlin was asked to bring a dvd of a personal favourite film (either in English or with English subtitles) as a ticket; they were allowed to choose any kind of film that seemed relevant for a 'European film library'.
The Baghdad band 'Shabab' played while more than 200 guests enjoyed a three-course Arabian meal. Later on, a documentary about the cinematic situation in Baghdad was shown and Tom Tykwer interviewed Baghdad filmmaker Oday Rasheed about Iraqi cineasts and the independent filmmakers of the country.
