| Following his training at the Munich Otto-Falckenberg school, JOACHIM KRÓL first concentrated on theatre work. He graced the stages of theatres in Bochum, Moers, Hanover, Basel, Munich and Cologne, and later played small cinema parts for Krystof Zanussi and Doris Dörrie. In 1992 he played his first lead role in Detlev Buck's NO MORE MR NICE GUY, marking his breakthrough onto the silver screen. With films such as Tom Tykwer's film debut DEADLY MARIA (1993), and Sönke Wortmann's cinema hit MAYBE, MAYBE NOT (1994) Król played his way into the top league of German actors. He received the Bavarian Film Prize for both films and also the Bundes Film Prize for the latter film. He later went on to play in Doris Dörrie's comedy NOBODY LOVES ME (1994) and Sönke Wortmann's THE SUPERWIFE (1996). Król's film presence is characterised by intensive mental and physical preparation phases. Long before he started shooting GLOOMY SUNDAY (1999), he familiarised himself with 1930s Hungary through photos and books. For the role of the Norwegian trapper, Lars in Stijn Coninx's Film WHEN THE LIGHT COMES (1998) he learned how to shoot and ride a dog-drawn sleigh in high mountain temperatures of minus 30 degrees in spitsbergen. It was a great physical challenge. In order to play the part of professional killer, Victor in Mennan Yapo's LAUTLOS (2002), Król put himself (amongst other things) through a three-month tailor-made (by physiotherapists and sport experts) fitness programme, which included power training between four and six times a week, physiotherapy and mental training. Joachim Król lives with his wife and son in Cologne.
